Southwest Airlines is ending its signature “bags fly free” policy, a hallmark of its customer-friendly approach for 54 years. Starting May 28, 2025, only top-tier passengers, including those with Business Select fares or A-List Preferred status, will receive free checked bags. Other passengers will face fees for checked luggage, though the exact charges haven’t been disclosed.
Along with the end of free checked bags for most travelers, Southwest is introducing a basic economy fare, which removes perks like advanced seat assignments. The airline will also adopt variable redemption rates for its loyalty program, meaning award ticket prices will fluctuate based on demand.
